John R. Sharpstein family papers, 1818-1948.

Personal and business papers of John R. Sharpstein; genealogical and historical documents concerning the Sharpsteen, Crittenden, and Johnson families; and papers of William C. Sharpsteen. Papers of John Sharpstein include correspondence and other material relating to his 1874 appointment by Gov. Newton Booth to the judgeship of the 12th Judicial District of Calif., the investigation of charges of incompetence made against him by David S. Terry in 1886, and to his life and professional activities in Wisc., prior to coming to San Francisco. William C. Sharpsteen's papers consist of personal and business correspondence, manuscript and typescript drafts of reminiscences and historical articles on San Francisco, and a scrapbook (1888-1943, bulk 1888-1899) containing clippings by and about him and his family.
